Our Oligarchic Media

DID YOU KNOW that six giant corporations control 90% of U.S. media outlets in America, mostly network TV and cable? And what about the pillars of our print media? The Boston Globe, New York Times, L.A. Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and others are owned by a collection of 15 billionaires. What might be the impact of this concentration of control over what we see, hear, and read? The most obvious drawback might be a lack of diversity in the narratives and perspectives. There is also a greater threat that a conflict of interest could dictate coverage, if and when the interests of these few corporations and billionaires run contrary to a complete telling of the facts.

Has this happened already?

Just last year notable newsman Ted Koppel expressed that he was “terribly concerned” with how the New York Times routinely puts “analysis, commentary on the front page.”

In a scathing resignation letter, former New York Times opinion editor Bari Weiss decried toxic groupthink at the paper, saying that even as a centrist she was threatened and intimidated. “Rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions,” she wrote, “a new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.” At the Times, she says,self-censorship has become the norm.”

To make matters worse, all of these owner companies and billionaires have significant business interests in communist China. In some cases, a majority of their wealth or growth opportunities derives from the good graces of the Chinese Communist Party.
