Democratic Socialists of America

Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is one of the country’s most rapidly growing political movements, boasting over 70,000 members (up from 8,000 in 2017). Although it is often known for its support of social democrat Bernie Sanders, the group’s politics are far more radical.

DSA has called for the abolishment of capitalism and its replacement with a “democratically controlled” economy. It also supports the efforts of communist Antonio Gramsci to advance a leftist cultural presence in all sectors of civil society. DSA believes in the abolishment of police and prisons, open borders, the end of “the rule of patriarchy in all realms of life,” including “personal relationships.”DSA is not a political party; it is a political organization whose goal is to add socialist policies to the platform of the Democratic Party. DSA-backed policies such as the Green New Deal and Medicare for All have now become mainstream Democratic Party policies. Two members of the congressional “Squad” caucus (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib) are DSA members, and DSA elected 20 out of the 29 candidates it endorsed for national and statewide office.
